Week 2: Expanding to Twitter

This week, I updated my twitter account for this course. I added a profile picture, cover picture, and tweeted a lot! It was my first time on Twitter, so it took me a while to learn how to maneuver through the app. However, after spending at least ten minutes daily for about three days, I am finally comfortable with the app.

I followed at least ten researchers and 15+ organizations advocating about animal-related issues or educating the public about animal science. The researchers I found were the ones I read about in the Time articles assigned last week such as Peter Singer, Carl Zimmer, and John Marzluff. While scrolling through anthropologist Barbara J King’s profile, I was captivated by many of her tweets. Unlike many other researchers, she not only focuses on animal advocacy and conservation but also informs the audience about interesting knowledge animal cognition. For example, she shared an article about how octopus minds work through their many arms.

The majority of the accounts I followed, though, were animal conservation or education organizations including Humane Society International, Save the Elephants, and Save Our Seas. Through these types of accounts, I found myself becoming more exposed to relevant present-day news and concerns about animal welfare and issues. The topics I ended up tweeting about and retweeting are more concerned about animal advocacy rather than science; however, I made sure to still tweet about animal science as well. I learned that cockroaches are gradually becoming superbugs, which made me nervous because I am severely allergic to them (and the fact that it will throw off the biodiversity). I was also shocked to read that Japan is resuming whale hunting after 30+ years of agreeing with the IWC that they would halt from further damaging the population count of whales in the world.

As a whole, I learned so much about animals already. Excited for the coming weeks, whether it is about animal science or current day issues, I am definitely compelled to be further immersed in more animal news and facts.

Nice profile, I like it. Also I like the scientists and organizations that you have followed, and I think we have followed some same ones, too. Good luck with next week.
